PhD Confirmation of Candidature

Under the working title of 'Architecture as a Performative Agent', Regional Associates director Campbell Drake has been confirmed as a PhD candidate at RMIT University .

PhD Abstract
Through an investigation into architecture as a performative agent, this research will attempt to articulate that which constitutes value for the communities in which a range of socially oriented projects are situated anddirected. The intended outcome of this research is to develop and enact new strategies that constitute value within the delivery of public art and community integrated design projects.

In reviewing and reflecting upon a body of work traversing public art to the design of African safari lodges, this practice-based research investigates the role of architecture as a performative agent in effecting social change within community integrated art and design. Emphasizing the spatial agency of the built environment, this research explores the entangled temporal relations between social and architectural space by evaluating and producing a range of projects in the fields of public art and socially engaged design.

Kyambura Lodge - Opening

Regional Associates are very pleased to announce the completion and opening of our first project in Uganda, the Kyambura Lodge, a boutique eco-hotel associated with an ongoing Chimpanzee habitat and community tourism initiative.
Rather than fostering the colonial myth of the ‘primitive savage’, Kyambura Lodge attempts to identify and celebrate contemporary ‘Africa’ which long ago replaced its spears with mobile phones, drums with transistor radios, mud huts with industrialized materials and traditional attire with tailored suits. Saturation City - Utopia Forever publication

The Saturation Cty project, by ReginalAssociates, Dyskors, Material thinking and MGS is to be included in the upcoming Gestalt publication Utopia Forever.

Utopia Forever is a collection of current projects and concepts from architecture, city planning, urbanism, and art that point beyond the restrictions of the factual to unleash the potential of creative visions. In contrast to the largely ideal-theoretic approaches of the past, today’s utopias take the necessity for societal changes into account. The projects in this book explore how current challenges for architecture, mobility, and energy as well as the logistics of food consumption and waste removal can be met.
